On Sunday, Ecuadorian authorities announced the seizure of a substantial quantity of explosives that were intended to be transported to Colombia for “terrorist activities.”
During a routine inspection in San Gabriel, law enforcement managed to confiscate 3,750 boxes of explosives along with 25,000 meters of detonating cord, resulting in the arrest of an Ecuadorian man and woman.
This operation followed a car bomb attack on Thursday near a military aviation school in Cali, Colombia’s third-largest city, which resulted in six fatalities and approximately sixty injuries.
On the same day, thirteen police officers were killed near Medellín, Colombia’s second-largest city, as they were involved in the destruction of coca farms.
Colombia, the world’s largest cocaine producer, is currently experiencing its worst wave of violence in a decade, exacerbated by attacks from armed gangs and active mafia operations, particularly in the illegal drug trade and mining.
The Ecuadorian police stated in a report on Sunday, “We have intercepted explosives intended for carrying out terrorist acts in Colombia.”
They added that the “large” shipment was being transported by truck from the coastal province of El Oro, which borders Peru, to the Andean province of Carchi in the north, adjacent to Colombia.
