Unprecedented Situation in Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

Israel is currently facing an unprecedented crisis due to its ongoing conflict with Gaza and the West Bank, heightened by increasing international pressure both officially and from the public. This situation is pushing the country to the brink of division and isolation.

Rising Dissent Among Reservists

Reports from Israeli and American media indicate that a significant number of Israeli reservists are refusing to participate in the conflict, labeling it as “unethical” and “lacking a clear objective.” Some soldiers have voiced concerns about being involved in actions that might be perceived as war crimes, reflecting a fracture within the military establishment. The Palestinian news agency “Ma’an” has reported that an increasing number of former and current soldiers, including high-ranking officers, are publicly expressing their refusal to continue the war, deeming it politically motivated and ethically wrong. Reserve soldier Yoav Ben Ari, who has served in two previous operations in Gaza, stated to NBC, “I refuse to commit war crimes… National duty means saying no.”

He further added, “As an Israeli and a human, I urge the Israeli government to stop starving two million people,” expressing his feelings of shame and guilt as “people in Gaza are dying of hunger.”

This dissent is not an isolated incident; NBC showcased a variety of opinions among soldiers that oppose the war. Since the ceasefire collapsed in March, over 12,000 reservists and active duty members have signed letters urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt the conflict, stating their intention to refuse service if it continues, according to the group “Restart Israel,” which tracks governmental opposition.

Cultural Uprising

The anti-war sentiment is also resonating among Israeli writers and intellectuals. In a notable protest within a series of cultural movements against the war, 160 Israeli authors and intellectuals signed a public statement yesterday titled: “Netanyahu is not Israel – his government does not represent us.”

The statement reads: “A war without political objectives is a misleading war. A war in which over 15,600 children have died is not an ethical war, but carries a black banner. This war contradicts the will and values of the majority of Israeli society. The Prime Minister does not possess the moral authority to continue it. We are determined to defend Israeli democracy and preserve hope for both peoples.”

Among the signatories are prominent Israeli authors, including David Grossman, Yehudit Katzir, Yehoshua Sobol, Orly Castel-Bloom, Dorit Rabinyan, Tsivia Shalev, Sami Berdugo, among others. This message was disseminated globally through poet Ilan Shainfeld, one of the leaders of this anti-war literary movement. This latest statement follows previous initiatives by the “Protest of Writers and Poets” movement, which organized a letter signed by around 300 writers and intellectuals in April demanding an immediate end to the conflict and the return of prisoners.

Diplomatic Tsunami

The internal dissent occurs simultaneously with escalating international criticism directed at Israel, with experts suggesting that the diplomatic situation remains salvageable. However, what is referred to as a “silent boycott” is beginning to impact Israel’s international standing, as reported by the Hebrew newspaper “Haaretz” yesterday.

This is evident in the declining representation at the international conference on combating anti-Semitism, hosted by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar in Jerusalem, where only four foreign ministers attended (from Norway, Hungary, Albania, and Moldova), alongside ministers from Estonia and the Czech Republic, while the U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio contributed only a recorded message. Most European nations either did not attend or sent lower-level delegates.
