Experts: Imagination is a Magical Force that Enhances Children’s Abilities

Authors and scholars specializing in children’s literature have emphasized the vital role of imagination in childhood, noting its power to shape characters who surmount challenges and inspire kids to believe in their abilities and make sacrifices to pursue their dreams. They highlighted the necessity of blending realistic elements with imaginative ones to enrich stories and capture the curiosity of young readers.

This discussion took place during a panel titled “Beyond Imagination,” hosted at the 16th edition of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival, currently taking place at the Sharjah Expo Center.

The panel featured several contributors, including Emirati writer and illustrator Maitha Al-Khayat, Emirati children’s literature specialist Hissa Al-Muhairi, Algerian writer and academic Dr. Fatima Zahra Ben Arab, Indian-American author Tharwat Chadda, known for his interest in Indian mythology and tales from “One Thousand and One Nights,” with Dr. Lamyaa Tawfiq facilitating the conversation.

Young Adult Literature

The Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival 2025 showcases a variety of books and publications aimed at youth, encompassing captivating stories and both original and translated literary works. This diversity reflects a cultural and intellectual richness that enhances the reading experience for this age group, providing interactive platforms that blend learning with entertainment.

The “Digital Future – United Arab Emirates” pavilion displayed the “Loving Father” series for young adults, comprised of translated works from Chinese literature that celebrate adventure and courage. Notably, it features the book “Dad, Where Did You Go?” by Xiang Zhe Deng, one of the prominent authors in children’s literature.

The collection also includes “Promises Through Time” by Anan, who holds a master’s degree in literature and art, as well as “Hope in Your Smile” by Lu Qi Wang, who published her first work at the age of thirteen. Additionally, “The Quirky Professor” by Tian Ning Wang, an award-winning author, is part of the lineup.

Meanwhile, “Kalimat Group” showcased a selection of translated novels for young readers, including “The Iliad and the Odyssey,” which presents Homer’s classic epics, written by Celine Boutard and translated into Arabic by Sarah Ammar.

Other titles included “One Thousand and One Nights in the Emergency Room,” adapted from the original tales by Dr. Mirmo and Baptiste Polio, portraying with humor and sensitivity the experiences of an emergency doctor and his patients.

In addition, the group featured “Username: Evie,” “Shadow Champion” by Gene Luen Yang and Sonny Liew, and “I Want More” by Rukhsana Khan, among others. The Kalimat Group also presented the bestselling translated series “The Dollar Horse Trilogy” by Lauren St. John.

The Magic of Rhymes

Experts in children’s literature have pointed out that the musical rhythm of language and rhyme is not merely ornamental but serves as a vital bridge connecting emotions with young readers. They stressed the importance of selecting words that resonate musically and using illustrations that harmonize with the rhythmic texts, creating a sensory and aesthetic experience that enhances children’s understanding and enjoyment of reading.

This assertion was made during the panel “The Magic of Rhymes in Children’s Books,” which was part of the activities at the 16th Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival, held under the theme “Let the Books Immerse You,” continuing until May 4.

Participants included Palestinian illustrator Bara’a Al-Awar, an award-winning artist in children’s illustrations, and British poet and children’s author Sitai Gurasia Chapman, with the discussion moderated by media personality Tasneem Ziyad.

Workshop on Horror Literature

In an exciting creative session, Egyptian author and novelist Mohamed Esmat, a specialist in horror literature, guided participating children at the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival through a workshop titled “Horror Literature – Its Types and How to Write It,” held in the illustrated stories corner.

During the workshop, Esmat aimed to introduce children to various types of horror literature and how to begin writing age-appropriate horror stories that help them confront their inner fears creatively and safely.

Bader Al-Bodor and the Enchanted Spindle

As part of the festival activities, storyteller Nizar Al-Qumari transformed a well-known global story, often referred to as “Sleeping Beauty,” into a tale titled “Bader Al-Bodor and the Enchanted Spindle.”

Rather than simply narrating the traditional story, Al-Qumari brought along miniature models of a castle and a witch-shaped toy, reminiscent of fairy tale witches who fly through the air.

Al-Qumari employed various techniques, including sound and light effects and shadow puppetry, to create an engaging interaction between the children and the story. His efforts were notably successful, evident in the children’s excitement as they imitated the witch’s flight, welcomed the prince, and mimicked different sounds, creating an unforgettable experience during their visit to the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival.
