International Justice Raises Pressure on Israel

Rubio in Israel Today as Vance Discusses “Difficult Task”

The International Court of Justice issued an advisory ruling yesterday that could put Israel in a difficult position and increase international pressure on it, while Washington continues its diplomatic efforts and officials visit Israel under the banner of upholding the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

The court called on Israel to allow the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to provide humanitarian assistance to the Gaza Strip.

The court’s president, Yuji Iwasawa, stated during a session in The Hague to present its advisory opinion regarding Israel’s obligations concerning aid to Palestinians in Gaza that Israel is “obligated to facilitate the relief plans put forth by the United Nations and its entities, including UNRWA.”

The UN’s highest legal body, composed of 11 judges, affirmed that Israel failed to substantiate claims that a significant proportion of UNRWA staff are members of Hamas.

As per its usual stance, Israel rejected the ruling. Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Orin Marmorstein stated via X platform, “Israel completely rejects the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice, which was entirely anticipated regarding UNRWA.” This ruling marks the third from the court concerning Israeli actions since the onset of the war in Gaza over two years ago.

Meanwhile, U.S. efforts to protect the ceasefire agreement continue, with U.S. Vice President Jai D. Vance in Jerusalem describing the disarmament of Hamas and the reconstruction of Gaza as “extremely difficult tasks.”

Today’s visit from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Israel is part of ongoing diplomatic pressure from the United States on its ally.

Following his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Vance remarked, “We face an extremely difficult challenge in disarming Hamas and rebuilding Gaza, aimed at improving the lives of the population and ensuring that Hamas does not become a threat to our friends in Israel again.”

He added, “This is not easy. I believe the Prime Minister knows this as well as anyone. But this is a commitment we have in the Trump administration.” He also expressed enthusiasm about collaborating on a peace plan for Gaza, stating, “These are decisive days.”

Netanyahu remarked, “We are creating a fantastic tomorrow with a completely new vision” about establishing a civilian government and ensuring security there. He acknowledged, “It won’t be easy” and “will require a lot of work, but I believe it is possible.”

The U.S. Vice President stated, “We do not wish to impose any foreign military presence on our Israeli friends, but we believe Turkey can play a constructive role.” In response, Netanyahu added, “I have strong opinions on this subject. Would you like to guess what they are?”

Netanyahu praised the “unparalleled alliance and partnership with the United States,” as reported by the Times of Israel. He concluded, “This is what changes the Middle East and transforms the world.”
