Japan’s Meteorological Agency has announced that July 2025 recorded the highest average temperature in the country since data collection began in 1898, amid severe heatwaves that scientists link to global climate change.
According to the agency, the average temperature exceeded the normal level by 2.89 degrees Celsius, surpassing the previous record set in July 2024. This marks the third consecutive year that the archipelago has experienced its warmest July on record.
Last Wednesday, Japan reached a record temperature of 41.2 degrees Celsius in the western Hyogo region, following the highest June temperature ever recorded in the country.
The Meteorological Agency warned of continued severe heatwaves in the upcoming month, noting that these events are accompanied by other climate changes, such as an early end to the rainy season in western Japan occurring three weeks ahead of schedule.
