The intensity of the drone conflict in Ukraine escalated with a significant Russian attack, marking the largest assault since the beginning of the war. This onslaught resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries across several cities. Meanwhile, Moscow has opted for silence following criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin, while European leaders emphasized that disarming Ukraine is a non-negotiable issue.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched its most extensive night attack involving missiles and drones since the war commenced, utilizing 728 drones and 13 missiles in their assault. Defense systems managed to intercept 711 of the drones and destroyed at least 7 missiles. A military source indicated that four locations were hit, though the exact damages from these attacks remain unspecified, with the primary target being the Volyn region in the city of Lutsk, situated hundreds of kilometers from the front lines. Local authorities confirmed that 8 individuals sustained injuries in Kyiv, Sumy, Zaporizhia, and Kherson.
Additionally, 8 civilians lost their lives due to Russian strikes in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, as disclosed by the Prosecutor General’s office. The same source noted that a drone strike hit vehicles, resulting in 5 deaths in the town of Rodynske. Another attack just ten minutes later, involving aerial bombings, killed 3 people in the city of Kostiantynivka, which is nearing Russian forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the assault as revealing Russia’s true intentions and its unwillingness to reach a ceasefire. He reiterated calls for stringent sanctions against Moscow and its economy, asserting that anyone who desires peace must take action. Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian president’s office, pointed out the notable timing of this attack coinciding with the announcement from the United States regarding its intention to supply arms to Kyiv.
In contrast, Russian authorities reported that at least 3 people died in Kursk due to a strike from a drone they claimed originated from Ukraine. The regional governor, Alexander Khinshtein, stated that 6 others were injured in the attack, accusing the Ukrainian military of targeting a beach in the city of over 400,000 residents.
Furthermore, the Russian Defense Ministry announced yesterday that Moscow’s forces had taken control of the Tolstoy village in the Donetsk region. The ministry added that its forces targeted Ukrainian military airports during night raids.
European Allegations
At the same time, the European Court of Human Rights condemned Russia for multiple violations of human rights that have occurred during its operations in Ukraine since 2014, including the conflict in Donbas and the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 in July 2014. The court’s president, French judge Matthias Guillaume, stated that the court found Russia guilty of executing civilians and Ukrainian soldiers outside of combat, torturing individuals, unlawfully displacing civilians, as well as destruction, looting, and confiscation of property.
The Strasbourg-based court emphasized that the responding state must immediately release or ensure the safe return of all individuals deprived of their liberty on Ukrainian territories controlled by Russia, who are still detained by Russian authorities. It also called for Russia’s prompt cooperation in establishing an independent international mechanism to identify all children transferred from Ukraine to Russia or Russian-controlled territories, prioritizing the children’s best interests.
Russian Calm
In related developments, the Kremlin stated yesterday that Moscow remains composed regarding criticisms from U.S. President Donald Trump towards President Putin concerning Ukraine, adding that it will continue to seek to mend its strained relations with the United States. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that they are fully calm about the situation and expect to continue dialogue with Washington to repair deteriorating bilateral relations. Peskov noted that Trump understands that resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will not be straightforward, highlighting Trump’s acknowledgment that achieving peace in Ukraine is more complex than initially thought. He also expressed uncertainty about the accuracy of a report from CNN suggesting that Trump once threatened to bomb Moscow to deter Putin from attacking Ukraine.
Red Line
French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated that disarming Ukraine – one of Russia’s conditions for ending the war – constitutes an absolute red line for Europeans. In an interview with the French weekly magazine Valeurs actuelles, ahead of a new meeting held by the coalition of willing nations, he asserted that the absolute red line is disarming Ukraine. He insisted on the need for coherence, stating that it is unacceptable to reject Ukraine’s NATO membership while simultaneously agreeing to strip it of its military capabilities. He emphasized the necessity for Ukrainians to ensure their own security, labeling this as a fundamental issue, as its absence would jeopardize the security of neighboring countries.
