A research team from the University of Wisconsin-Madison has uncovered a concerning connection between glacier melt and increased volcanic activity.
The study reveals that massive glaciers have historically played a crucial role in suppressing volcanic eruptions over thousands of years.
Dr. Pablo Moreno-Yager, one of the leaders of the research team, explains, “The sheer weight of ice layers accumulated above volcanoes exerts pressure on the magma beneath, limiting its potential to erupt.”
However, as these glaciers continue to melt, the pressure is gradually relieved, creating conditions that may lead to volcanic eruptions.
