My Journey to Becoming the CEO of a Top Automotive Firm

Emirates Man

This week, Emirates Man features an interview with Dr. Hamid Haqparwar, the Chief Executive Officer of AGMC (Arabian Gulf Mechanical Centre). AGMC is a prominent automotive company acting as the exclusive importer for BMW Group brands, including BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce, in Dubai, Sharjah, and the Northern Emirates.

Welcome to the weekly segment of Emirates Man, ‘How I Got My Job as…’ where we engage with remarkable entrepreneurs and business leaders from the UAE and beyond to explore their career journeys, daily routines, insights for newcomers, and the challenges they have faced along the way.

With extensive experience at BMW, Dr. Haqparwar discusses his initial steps in the automotive industry and shares perspectives on his work ethos that solidify the brand’s standing as a top automotive retailer in the region.

What was your favourite subject in school?

My favourite subjects were mathematics and geography.

What was your first job?

My first role was at BMW, where I focused on developing new markets for the BMW Group.

What led you to Dubai?

Like many others, my move was work-related. I was transferred here from Germany nearly 18 years ago for my position with the BMW Group.

What motivated you to pursue a career in the automotive industry?

My father inspired me. He was involved in the automotive sector as a used car dealer, and I inherited my passion for this field and learned invaluable skills from him.

What are the main responsibilities in your role?

A crucial aspect of my position is leading an exceptional team that shares a common goal for success. I aim to motivate them to excel both as AGMC team members and in their personal lives. As a CEO, I cannot oversee everything, making it essential to have a dependable team.

Can you describe your typical daily routine?

My day begins early with a workout, either running or weightlifting. Afterwards, I head to the office where I start with emails and attend several meetings. I maintain an open-door policy to encourage team members to discuss any topics or concerns with me, which adds unpredictability to my day. If I don’t have evening events or launches, I usually return home around 7 PM feeling quite drained!

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

Always remain calm. There is a solution to every business problem, and a calm mindset makes it easier to find one.

What is the worst advice you have ever received?

That’s an interesting question. I would say that striving for perfection in everything you do is unwise. Life entails risks, and while some lead to positive outcomes and others to negative, each experience is an opportunity to learn.

What are the key developments for AGMC in Dubai and the Northern Emirates for 2025?

All operations are currently running smoothly. Recently, we inaugurated a new showroom in Sharjah to enhance our customer service in the Northern Emirates. We are expanding our business, and Dubai has been supportive in helping us realize our aspirations.

What has been your greatest challenge to date?

The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges, a situation many faced globally.

What advice would you give to those looking to follow your path?

Embrace risks. Venture into areas others might overlook. Tackle the tough projects—it is through these challenges that you will grow and develop.

What are your future aspirations?

Personally, I aim to lead a more relaxed lifestyle.
