Nuclear Talks Between the US and Iran Reach a Pivotal Phase

The negotiations between Washington and Tehran regarding the controversial Iranian nuclear program are set to enter a critical phase today, with a meeting scheduled in the Italian capital.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Biegun and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are expected to arrive in Rome to participate in the fifth round of discussions.

Oman is mediating between the two countries.

The United States demands that the Iranian government completely halt its uranium enrichment, which Washington views as a necessary step to prevent the permanent development of nuclear weapons.

Tehran has rejected this demand but has expressed a willingness to reinstate some restrictions on its nuclear program and allow for stricter oversight.

Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his country had made a proposal to Iran while negotiations regarding the nuclear program continued.

However, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Tehran had not received any written proposals from the U.S., either directly or indirectly.

It’s worth noting that the United States and Iran have conducted four rounds of indirect negotiations concerning Tehran’s nuclear program.
