Presidential Elections in Poland Test Prime Minister’s Vision Against Trump Influence

Poland’s Presidential Elections: A Crucial Decision

Poles are heading to the polls today, Sunday, to cast their votes in a presidential election that will determine whether Warsaw will continue its pro-European path outlined by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, or take a turn towards nationalism reminiscent of President Donald Trump’s agenda.

The return of Trump to power has reignited skepticism about Europe across the continent. Today’s election serves as the most significant test for Tusk’s pro-European vision since he assumed office in 2023, when he unseated the nationalist Law and Justice Party.

A Contested Race

The elections pit Rafal Trzaskowski, the Mayor of Warsaw and a member of Tusk’s Civic Coalition, against conservative historian Karol Nawrocki, who is backed by the Law and Justice Party.

Trzaskowski is seen as the frontrunner and is likely to face Nawrocki in a runoff scheduled for June 1 if no candidate secures more than 50 percent of the vote. Due to media blackout laws, no opinion poll results can be published from Saturday morning until the voting concludes today.

In addition to these candidates, the race includes far-right contender Sławomir Mentzen from the Confederation party, parliamentary speaker Szymon Hołownia from the center-right Poland 2050 party, and leftist candidate Magdalena Biejat.

Election Day Coincidence

The first round of the Polish elections coincides with the second round of the presidential elections in Romania, where nationalist candidate George Simion, campaigning with the slogan “Let’s Make Romania Great Again,” is facing off against centrist Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan.

If two candidates skeptical of the European Union succeed, it could send shockwaves throughout the EU at a time when it is grappling with the dual challenges of Russia’s war on Ukraine and tariffs imposed by Trump.

Polling stations for the Polish elections opened at 7 AM local time (0500 GMT) and will close at 9 PM. Approximately 29 million eligible Polish voters can participate in this pivotal election.
