Saudi Arabia Uncovers Pottery Fragments and Stone Tools Dating Back 50,000 Years

The Saudi Heritage Authority has successfully completed an archaeological survey and excavation project at a significant site in the village of Al-Qurayn, located northwest of Riyadh. This initiative involved a team of Saudi experts and is part of ongoing efforts to explore, preserve, and promote the nation’s cultural heritage, recognizing it as an essential cultural and economic resource for the Kingdom.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) on Sunday, the aim of the project was to gather extensive information that would enhance scientific studies regarding the Al-Qurayn site. This includes understanding the historical and civilizational timeline of the area, recognizing architectural styles and construction techniques, and documenting the archaeological finds resulting from the excavation work.

The excavation has revealed circular structures that closely resemble tombs from the third and second millennia BCE, as well as an ancient road stretching from the valley to the elevated plateau at Al-Qurayn, leading to the city of Riyadh. Additionally, researchers discovered numerous pottery fragments and stone tools, with some artifacts dating back over 50,000 years to the Middle Stone Age.

This finding is a key outcome of the “Al-Yamamah” initiative launched by the Heritage Authority, aimed at redefining the archaeological map of Riyadh and surrounding areas. The initiative employs advanced research techniques for precise surveys to document previously unexplored sites and analyze human settlement patterns across different eras, illustrating the depth of the region’s cultural and historical legacy.

The Heritage Authority emphasized that its ongoing archaeological survey and excavation activities throughout the Kingdom are crucial for preserving national heritage resources. The cultural heritage of Saudi Arabia reflects the rich history of various civilizations that have settled on its land throughout different historical periods, showcasing the country’s wealth in heritage, culture, and history.
