Sevil Dolmacı Gallery’s Founder Discusses Artistry and Curatorial Practices

Life

Sevil Dolmacı, the founder of Sevil Dolmacı Gallery in Dubai, shares insights on developing a vision and establishing a unique identity within the burgeoning art sectors. She discusses her changing preferences and emphasizes the significance of intuition in nurturing emerging artistic talents.

What does your morning look like, specifically your routine?

I begin my day quite early. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, at 9 am, I practice Pilates. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I enjoy strolling by the waterfront in Bebek. By midday, I head to the office for meetings.

What are the defining features of Sevil Dolmacı Gallery that differentiate it from others?

Sevil Dolmacı Gallery is the pioneering gallery in the Middle East that highlights American contemporary art alongside Turkish art. Additionally, we have a specialized Digital Section dedicated to promoting diverse art initiatives and facilitating opportunities for emerging talents, aiding them in establishing their presence in the art community.

How have your past roles as a lecturer and consultant influenced your current position?

My extensive background in art history has proven invaluable in steering the gallery, distinguishing me in the industry. It has enabled us to gain traction rapidly and establish a robust network of connections. Merging comprehensive knowledge with an understanding of market trends has been a significant advantage, making international artists feel secure and eager to collaborate with us, which has greatly contributed to the gallery’s swift advancement.

Why is establishing a presence in the Middle East significant for Sevil Dolmacı Gallery?

The region’s status as an emerging market with a keen interest in art played a crucial role in our decision. The strong investments in art and the development of museums in the area were particularly motivating factors. Currently, Sevil Dolmacı Dubai is showcasing two pieces by designers Kengo Kuma and Daniel Weil.

“I have a strong attraction to abstract and minimalistic designs. Simultaneously, I love incorporating vibrant, popular styles to create a compelling contrast.”

How do you identify creative individuals you wish to collaborate with?

Kengo Kuma, the mind behind the OMM Museum in Türkiye, shares a similar artistic vision to ours, which motivated our collaboration. I am especially captivated by abstract and minimal forms. At the same time, integrating colorful, popular elements allows for a striking contrast—this approach is consistent in my selections for both paintings and design artifacts.

What guiding principles do you adhere to when supporting new artists and exhibitions?

I prioritize artists who have received their education from well-respected art institutions. Their outlook on art and career direction are also essential considerations. When an exhibition’s theme aligns with our mission, I offer our gallery space for it. In Türkiye, I actively support both the Venice Biennale and the Istanbul Biennale, as they represent two of the most significant international showcases for Türkiye in the global art context.

What has been crucial for you in cultivating an authentic community around your exhibitions and initiatives?

My passion for art is profound. My commitment and involvement in the field resonate with collectors, who appreciate the knowledge and experiences I share.

How does the commercial aspect influence your work as a creative?

The successful management of the art business is one of the most critical facets of art history. I operate within a methodical and sustainable framework to ensure enduring success.

What lies ahead for you and your brand?

We are gearing up to participate in Art Dubai with our Digital Section. Additionally, at our Istanbul location, we are preparing for a group exhibition curated by Robert Fleck that will highlight notable artists from around the globe. This is a thrilling upcoming venture for us.

In the context of design, which designer or artist has made a significant impact on you?

The collaboration between Alessandro Mendini and Peter Halley was a remarkable exhibition that showcased two artists and designers I hold in high regard.
