Sharjah Reading for Children: Engaging Discussions and Exciting Presentations

The Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival presented a variety of cultural and theatrical events filled with knowledge, showcasing its activities the day before yesterday.

Khawla Al-Mujaini, the general coordinator of the festival, expressed gratitude for the support received from the festival’s partners, stating:

“In its 16th edition, the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival is bolstered by a select group of partners and sponsors who play a vital role in the festival’s success and its distinction as a leading global platform for fostering a culture of reading among children, promoting cultural dialogue, and celebrating authors and illustrators who have enriched the Arab children’s literature.”

“With their continuous commitment, active participation, and qualitative contributions, we will offer comprehensive programs that enhance visitor experiences, meet the aspirations of children and their parents, and contribute to nurturing a knowledgeable generation.”

The festival’s activities included a series of targeted sessions and seminars, highlighted by a discussion panel titled “The Impact of Picture Books on Storytelling,” which featured:

Dr. Abdullah Al-Sharhan, an Emirati director, artist, educator, and content creator for children; Bara’a Al-Awwar, a Palestinian illustrator and author who has authored over forty children’s books; Rahat Kadouji, a bestselling children’s book author and illustrator.

During the session, artists and illustrators specializing in children’s book illustrations emphasized that images are essential in engaging children and deepening their understanding of the text. They pointed out that illustrations do not merely translate the story but also add an emotional dimension that enhances the reading experience. They stressed the importance of understanding a child’s psychology and the effects of colors and nature in stimulating imagination and fostering a lasting relationship with books.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Sharhan spoke about the significant influence of vivid imagery and clear language on children’s psychology, presenting examples from his environment and drawing inspiration from the world of children to create impactful content, describing it as words that reach a child’s heart more swiftly.

He mentioned the importance of interactive books in establishing ongoing relationships between children and books, noting that a child either loves a book at first sight or never connects with it at all.

Illustrator and author Bara’a Al-Awwar highlighted the importance of drawing inspiration from traditional stories in children’s illustrations. Rahat Kadouji noted that various artistic elements in images enhance story comprehension and capture children’s attention.

Several writers and specialists in children’s literature pointed out that the new generation requires innovative methods of education and communication that focus on interaction and continuous engagement, rather than merely providing ready-made answers.

They emphasized the need to revisit educational discourse methodologies in a way that aligns with children’s aspirations and their growing curiosity towards knowledge. This was discussed during a panel titled “Small Minds … Big Dreams,” featuring Emirati writer and storyteller Eman Al-Yousef, Libyan academic researcher and children’s rights advocate Amel Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Hangari, and Chinese author and illustrator Xin Li, whose book “I Lived in the Whale’s Belly” won the Barnes & Noble award for Best Illustrated Children’s Book for 2024.

Recommendations and Insights

Participating publishers at the 16th edition of the Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival are showcasing a variety of publications addressing psychological and behavioral issues relevant to children and their families, presenting recommendations and pedagogical keys that aid families and educators in nurturing a more balanced and aware generation. The displayed books vary in nature and format.

Performance

Amid the beats of drums and vibrant rhythms, the interactive theatrical performance “Jungleland” captivated the minds and hearts of children from the very first moment, as part of the festival’s events. The troupe delivered a lively presentation blending rhythmic dances and acrobatics.
