Speakers: A Crucial Role of Media and Educational Institutions in Strengthening Identity

A session discussing the role of media in supporting Arab identity focused on how media tools can be utilized to document and safeguard this identity. Participants agreed that media, along with educational and cultural institutions, plays a crucial role in promoting and instilling this identity in the minds of future generations.

The session, led by media figure Abdullah Al-Mudayfer from Rotana Khalijia, featured insights from researcher and author Dr. Rashid Khayoun and cultural critic and academic Abdullah Al-Ghidhami. Discussions highlighted the media’s role in preserving Arab identity, emphasizing its significance as a powerful tool for enhancing awareness and addressing challenges posed by globalization.

Rashid Khayoun pointed out that the media bears a substantial responsibility in shaping public opinion and fostering positive values and attitudes that ensure the establishment and reinforcement of Arab identity. He stressed the need to promote interest in the Arabic language and provide society with adequate information to instill values of citizenship and national belonging.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Al-Ghidhami remarked that media serves as the primary gateway for protecting Arab identity. He asserted that a solid framework of values, beliefs, ideas, and behaviors that reflect the “identity” gives media unique characteristics and allows it to engage effectively with the local community.

Changes

Abdullah Al-Ghidhami also noted that national identity is a living entity that interacts with the changing times, drawing its roots from the past, gaining momentum from the present, and preparing for the future with a refreshed spirit while retaining its authenticity. He added that media acts as an influential force in expressing identity, defining its features, and shaping its interactions and elements.

He further explained that the media has a significant responsibility in enhancing public awareness and directing it towards national values, indicating that safeguarding Arab identity requires the provision of credible and high-quality media content.
