Meteorological experts have indicated that the tropical storm “Jill” is expected to strengthen into a hurricane in the eastern Pacific within hours, although it is not anticipated to make landfall.
The National Hurricane Center, based in Miami, reported that the storm is located approximately 870 miles (1400 kilometers) southwest of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico.
The storm currently has maximum sustained winds reaching 65 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) and is moving west-northwest at a speed of 16 miles per hour (26 kilometers per hour).
There are currently no coastal warnings or advisories in effect. The storm is expected to continue its west-northwest trajectory in the coming days, potentially increasing in speed as it traverses the ocean.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Iona is moving westward over the ocean, located about 1190 miles (1915 kilometers) west-southwest of Honolulu, with maximum winds of 45 miles per hour.
Previously classified as a hurricane, it has weakened but poses no threat to land. Meteorologists have indicated that additional storms may develop in the eastern Pacific in the upcoming days.
The President of the World Meteorological Organization has called for enhanced international and national efforts in monitoring and early warning systems to ensure timely alerts for natural disasters such as earthquakes and tsunamis.
Dr. Abdullah Ahmed Mandoos, President of the World Meteorological Organization, emphasized that earthquakes and tsunamis remain among the deadliest natural disasters, presenting an increasing threat to human safety and the global economy. He pointed out that significant seismic events over the past decades, such as the 1960 Chile earthquake, the 2004 Sumatra earthquake resulting in over 200,000 casualties, and the 2011 Fukushima earthquake, underline the existential danger posed by tsunami waves generated by underwater earthquakes to coastal communities. He noted that over the last fifty years, the world has experienced more than 140 earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 8, resulting in numerous tsunami waves, causing over 250,000 deaths and losses exceeding $100 billion.
Furthermore, the recent 8.8 magnitude earthquake in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia highlighted the critical importance of early warning systems, as timely alerts helped mitigate the impacts of several-meter-high tsunami waves. He stressed that warnings are only effective if they are timely and accompanied by proper ground preparedness.
He pointed out that early warning systems rely on international networks of seismic monitoring stations and smart ocean buoys, but their effectiveness hinges on rapid data analysis, infrastructure readiness, and community responsiveness.
In this context, Dr. Mandoos noted that the World Meteorological Organization prioritizes the “Early Warnings for All” initiative, a global program launched by the United Nations aimed at ensuring that everyone receives timely disaster warnings by 2027. He stated, “We are collaborating with governments and international partners to ensure that no area is caught off guard by a disaster without prior warning, emphasizing that early warning is a human right, not a luxury.”
