Surpassing Expectations: How Many Hours Did Subscribers Spend on Netflix?

Netflix has announced that it achieved revenues of $11.1 billion and a net income of $3.1 billion in the second quarter, surpassing Wall Street expectations.

In its semi-annual engagement report, the company stated that subscribers watched over 95 billion hours during the first half of 2025, marking a 1% increase from the previous year. The action film “Back in Action,” featuring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, was the most viewed title in this period, while the British drama series “Adolescent” topped the charts for TV shows.

According to a report from The New York Times on the company’s results, notable successful titles in the second quarter included new seasons of returning shows like “Ginny & Georgia” and “Squid Game,” alongside new series such as “Sirens” and “The Four Seasons,” and films like Tyler Perry’s “Straw” and “Nonnas” starring Vince Vaughn. The animated movie “K-Pop Demon Hunters” garnered 80 million views, making it one of the most popular films in its category.

The company announced plans to relaunch the iconic talent competition show “Star Search” from the 1980s in 2026, along with a middleweight boxing match between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford later this year. The female fight night headlined by Katie Taylor against Amanda Serrano, which aired last week, attracted six million views globally—though far from the massive viewership of last year’s Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul match, it still set a record as the most-watched women’s sports event in 2025.

Mike Proulx, a research director at Forrester Analytics, remarked: “Netflix’s announcements last quarter make it appear like a traditional TV network.”

The streaming giant is also seeing notable success in this week’s Emmy nominations, receiving 120 nominations across 44 different titles. The British drama series “Adolescent” earned 13 nominations, including Best Limited Series or Anthology. HBO Max was the only platform to outperform it, securing 142 nominations.

This year, the company will release the final season of “Stranger Things” and a new season of “Wednesday.” Moreover, it has plans for films in 2025, such as Guillermo Del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” Kathryn Bigelow’s “Dynamite House,” and a sequel to Adam Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore,” which will demand substantial marketing costs—a factor that contributed to a nearly 1% drop in Netflix’s stock in after-hours trading.

The total number of Netflix viewers rose in June, according to Nielsen. The platform’s share of total television usage reached 8.3%, increasing by nearly 1% since May, though it still trails behind YouTube, which holds a 12.8% share of overall viewership.

Netflix’s results are often seen as an indicator for other companies as they coincide with the earnings season. In a letter to shareholders, the company mentioned it would raise its revenue forecast for the year, citing “strong member growth and advertising sales.”

The ad-supported membership tier, which increased from $6.99 to $7.99 at the beginning of the year, has captured significant interest on Wall Street, even though the company had previously stated it does not anticipate it to be a major revenue driver in 2025. The Netflix community is pleased with the company’s expectations of doubling its advertising revenue again this year.
