Syrian Foreign Minister Announces Roadmap for Reconciliation in Sweida with US and Jordanian Support
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaybani revealed a new roadmap on Tuesday, designed to promote reconciliation in the Sweida province, with backing from the United States and Jordan.
During a press conference alongside Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and US envoy Tom Barak, al-Shaybani stated, “The Syrian government has laid out a clear plan to work on… supporting justice, building trust, and enhancing community reconciliation.”
He emphasized that the roadmap relies on actionable steps supported by both the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the United States.
According to al-Shaybani, these steps include holding accountable those responsible for assaults on civilians and their property, in full coordination with the international investigation network.
Additionally, the plan involves compensating victims, restoring villages and towns, and facilitating the return of displaced individuals. Al-Shaybani also mentioned the need to deploy local forces from the Ministry of Interior to secure roads and ensure safe movement for people and commerce.
The roadmap further encompasses efforts to uncover the fate of missing persons and to return abductees to their families from all parties involved, along with launching an internal reconciliation process that includes all community members.
Jordan’s Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, highlighted that a part of the roadmap introduced today is a joint Syrian-Jordanian-American mechanism designed to ensure the implementation of all announcements made by the Syrian Foreign Minister in order to resolve these issues.
Al-Shaybani noted that both Jordanian and American counterparts showed readiness to provide necessary support for these initiatives, whether through humanitarian aid or mobilizing international funding.
US Special Envoy for Syria and Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barak, remarked that “the steps taken today by your government are historic.” He added that the United States is working with neighboring countries to weave together “threads of assistance, understanding, and support into a new tapestry,” asserting that today marks a critical point in this journey.
