The Syrian military has withdrawn its heavy weaponry from the southern region of the country, which Israel has been seeking to keep demilitarized, according to a Syrian military official who spoke to AFP on Tuesday.
The anonymous official stated, “The Syrian forces have removed their heavy armaments from southern Syria,” adding that this operation “began two months ago” following a series of violent incidents in Sweida. During this unrest, Israel targeted official sites in Damascus and military vehicles belonging to the government after they had been deployed in the predominantly Druze area.
