The Syrian Arab News Agency reported today that the spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, Nour al-Din al-Baba, has refuted claims of government forces being deployed in Sweida Province.
Earlier, a ministry representative had informed Reuters that security forces were preparing to redeploy in the city of Sweida to halt the clashes between Druze and Bedouin tribes.
A fragile ceasefire was observed on Friday in southern Syria, following a truce announced on Wednesday that briefly halted intense fighting between Bedouin and Druze fighters in Sweida, which had prompted the Syrian government to mobilize troops.
Israel intervened in the hostilities, stating it would not permit the Syrian government to deploy forces in the southern region. The Israeli military conducted strikes against Syrian forces in Sweida as well as targeting the Ministry of Defense and areas near the presidential palace in Damascus.
Following the announcement of the ceasefire, Syrian troops withdrew from Sweida; however, clashes reignited late Thursday between Bedouin and Druze fighters.
The Israeli military carried out further attacks in Sweida Province overnight.
