The powerful typhoon “Rajasa” has struck the shores of Hong Kong, bringing waves that surpassed the height of streetlights and severely disrupting life along the southern coast of China this Wednesday morning, after causing destruction in Taiwan and the Philippines.
Authorities in Taiwan have reported 14 fatalities, while the Philippines has confirmed 3 deaths linked to the typhoon’s path through both countries.
Gusty winds awoke residents of Hong Kong early in the morning.
According to state broadcaster CCTV, over one million individuals have been evacuated from Guangdong province, known as the economic powerhouse in southern China. The national meteorological agency anticipates that the destructive typhoon will make landfall between the cities of Taishan and Chaojijiang by Wednesday afternoon or evening. Schools, factories, and transportation services have been suspended in around a dozen cities.
Additionally, Hong Kong and Macau, the nearby casino hub, have shut down schools and flight services, with several stores also closing. Hundreds have sought refuge in temporary shelters in both cities, while one person has been reported injured in Macau.
