The UAE Space Agency has announced the launch of an innovative initiative aimed at transforming the request process for satellite imagery. This project, developed in collaboration with Space 42—an international leader in AI-driven space technologies—marks a significant advancement towards the new generation of the GIQ.AE space data analysis center.
A cooperation memorandum has been signed with the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center to enable access to the center’s satellite data, which will be disseminated through the space data analysis platform. This initiative supports the government’s efforts to develop the space services sector, broaden its applications, enhance governmental efficiency, and bolster the capabilities of the private sector, thereby increasing its competitiveness both domestically and globally.
Dr. Ahmad Balthair Al-Falasi, Minister of Sports and Chairman of the UAE Space Agency, stated, “The Smart Transformation Project for satellite imagery requests reflects the UAE’s commitment to adopting innovative digital solutions that enhance the integration of technology with space data. This supports a knowledge-based economy and exemplifies the leadership’s vision for establishing a comprehensive national space ecosystem that empowers both public and private sectors to leverage AI in data analysis and expedite future decision-making.”
He emphasized that this project is a groundbreaking step towards achieving the objectives of the “We Are the UAE 2031” vision, aimed at creating a more innovative and future-oriented government and developing a data-driven, innovative national economy.
Engineer Salem Al-Batthi Al-Qubaisi, Director General of the UAE Space Agency, highlighted that this transformative project addresses current challenges in the space data sector. These challenges include the multitude of service providers, difficulties in managing interactions with each, delays due to lengthy request processes, and the complexities involved in selecting the most suitable satellite due to varied specifications, all of which contribute to high operational costs.
He stressed that the next phase of the service aims to create a smart, balanced digital environment that fosters innovation and partnerships between the public and private sectors within the space services domain. The goal is to achieve a 50% increase in satellite imagery requests over the next two years and a user satisfaction rate exceeding 80% regarding ease of use and accuracy.
Salem Hamid Al-Mari, Director General of the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center, remarked, “The development of the next generation of the GIQ space data analysis center underscores the UAE’s commitment to building a sustainable, integrated, and data-driven future.”
He added, “By broadening the access to high-resolution satellite data that the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center continues to develop, we are enhancing national capabilities in earth observation, ensuring that space data contributes to environmental monitoring, resource management, and sustainable development to support governmental and private entities.
