World Food Program Appeals for Extension of Ceasefire in Gaza

This Sunday marks the initiation of a temporary halt to military operations announced by Israel in three densely populated areas of the Gaza Strip. This decision is part of new measures aimed at addressing the humanitarian crisis in the region.

The ceasefire comes in response to international criticism regarding Israel’s actions during the conflict, along with growing concerns about the potential for famine in Gaza.

The Israeli military declared earlier today that it would implement a “tactical suspension” of operations in Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, and the Mawasi area, with the intention of “increasing the flow of humanitarian aid” into these regions.

This temporary ceasefire is set to take place daily from 10 AM to 8 PM local time, starting from today and continuing until further notice.

Additionally, the military announced plans to establish safe routes for delivering aid and reported that it had conducted aerial drops into Gaza, which included packages containing flour, sugar, and canned foods.

Food security experts have warned for several months about the risk of famine in Gaza, as Israel has restricted aid access, alleging that Hamas diverts supplies to bolster its rule, yet providing no evidence to support this claim.

Recent images of severely malnourished children in Gaza have prompted international backlash against Israel, including from close allies, who are calling for an end to the conflict and the ensuing humanitarian crisis.

The World Food Programme of the United Nations has welcomed the steps to ease aid restrictions but emphasized the necessity for a broader ceasefire in Gaza to ensure that food reaches all those in need.

The Israeli military stated that these new measures were coordinated with the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations.

The World Food Programme further noted that one-third of Gaza’s population, approximately two million people, has been without food for days, with nearly half a million people experiencing conditions similar to famine.

According to the organization, sufficient food is currently available within Gaza or en route to sustain the entire population for nearly three months.

A senior Hamas official, Mahmoud Mardawi, described Israel’s shift in stance on the humanitarian crisis as an acknowledgment of the Palestinian suffering in Gaza, adding that this move appears to be more about improving Israel’s international image rather than saving lives.

Mardawi asserted that Israel “will not go unpunished and will inevitably pay the price for these criminal acts.”

Israel contended that these new measures are being implemented while it continues its assault on Hamas in other areas.

Prior to the suspension of military activities, health officials in Gaza reported that at least 16 Palestinians had been killed in separate attacks.

The Director-General of Gaza’s health ministry, Dr. Mounir al-Bursh, stressed that this “humanitarian ceasefire” will be meaningless if it does not transform into a genuine opportunity to save lives, urging for significant supplies of medical and other aid to combat malnutrition among children.

Dr. al-Bursh added that “any delay equates to another funeral.”
