Writers and Researchers: Children’s Literature Instills Human Values in Generations

The Role of Children’s Literature in Shaping Identity and Values

A group of writers and researchers specializing in children’s literature has emphasized that reading and children’s literature are fundamental tools for developing a child’s character and nurturing their cultural identity. They highlighted the importance of instilling Arabic and universal values at an early age and discussed the role of literature in addressing social issues in a manner that aligns with children’s understanding, encouraging critical thinking and openness to diversity. They stressed the need for representation of different backgrounds and cultures in children’s books to foster a sense of belonging and mutual respect, affirming that literature contributes to building more cohesive communities and serves as an effective means to bridge cultural differences while promoting shared values such as friendship and tolerance.

Discussion Forum on Literature’s Unifying Power

These insights were shared during a panel discussion titled “Stories that Unite Us,” organized by the Sharjah Book Authority as part of the 2025 Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival’s cultural program. The event featured prominent voices including Emirati author Badria Al Shamsi, Syrian-American writer and journalist Randa Romani, Moroccan author Hassan Benmouna, and Tunisian academic Dr. Nizar Qamri, with media host Aisha Al Mazmi facilitating the conversation.

Cultural Particularities

Badria Al Shamsi addressed the diminishing distinctions between age groups in acquiring knowledge, akin to the blurring of cultural boundaries due to the rapid availability of information. She underscored the necessity of culturally and intellectually equipping children from a young age to nurture their Arabic values, as a child’s character is formed predominantly in the first five years of life. She pointed out that children’s literature can effectively tackle social and cultural challenges, serving as a powerful tool for discussing significant issues in ways that are suitable for children, thereby promoting critical thinking and social awareness, while also impacting identity and belonging.

Cultivating Hope Through Writing

Randa Romani shared her experiences in writing and addressing themes of identity and conflict, with a focus on instilling hope in children through her narratives. She stressed the importance of diversity and inclusivity in children’s literature, needing characters and stories that reflect various cultural, social, and ability backgrounds. This representation helps children feel a sense of belonging and self-worth while promoting appreciation for others. She highlighted that children’s literature plays a crucial role in unity and diversity, fostering a generation that is more open and accepting of differences. Moreover, she discussed how personal experiences with stories significantly shape children’s lives and their perspectives of the world.

Shared Human Values in Literature

Hassan Benmouna pointed out the necessity of focusing on the shared human values highlighted in literature, such as friendship, cooperation, compassion, tolerance, and justice. He argued that these themes have been explored throughout history and should be reinterpreted by writers in innovative ways. He emphasized the importance of equipping children to appreciate language and literature, noting that a writer’s role transcends community building; it involves crafting literature and adapting themes to fit cultural contexts. This approach can lead to more unified and cohesive societies, while also exploring the power of storytelling to connect people and transcend differences.

The Scientific Impact of Reading

Dr. Nizar Qamri noted the significant educational role of reading, asserting that stories can be accessed anytime and anywhere, aiding in language development and expanding imagination. He remarked on the profound impact of reading on children’s development, stimulating their thinking and enabling them to create mental images that enhance cognitive abilities. He also discussed the ways in which stories help build cultural bridges, introducing children to diverse cultures and traditions, which fosters mutual understanding and respect among peers from various backgrounds, breaking stereotypes and enhancing empathy towards others.
