Zelensky: We Require a Meeting Among Leaders to Conclude the War

Following a swift round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, which yielded no significant breakthroughs, the conversation intensifies around a potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. The latter is keen on the meeting, while the Kremlin dismisses it as a possibility unless it serves as a final step toward a peace agreement.

Zelensky indicated that representatives from Kyiv and Moscow explored the possibility of a meeting during their discussions in Istanbul. He mentioned, “We need to end the war, likely starting with a meeting between the leaders. They initiated discussions on this during our talks, which signifies progress towards a potential meeting format.”

The Ukrainian leader also confirmed that his country received assurances from allies regarding the supply of three Patriot missile defense systems, noting that negotiations are ongoing for an additional seven systems. He shared with reporters, “I have received official confirmation from Germany for two systems and from Norway for one. We are currently collaborating with our Dutch partners.”

Zelensky further stated that production of these defense systems has commenced, estimating the urgent financial requirement for this effort at six billion dollars. He plans to urge European allies to assist in funding salary improvements for his troops as a means to address the growing shortage of recruits.

Meeting Exclusion

In response to speculation about a possible meeting between the two presidents, the Kremlin asserted that such a summit could only occur as a final step toward a peace accord.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked that it is unlikely such a meeting could take place by the end of August, as suggested by Ukraine, adding, “A summit can and should be held as a concluding phase of negotiations to solidify the mechanisms and agreements reached by the experts. Achieving something of this complexity within 30 days is clearly unlikely.”

Political Efforts

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan revealed plans to potentially speak with Russian President Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump this week to explore the feasibility of convening a leaders’ meeting in Istanbul to discuss the war in Ukraine. He stated, “By contacting both Putin and Trump, we will determine if it is possible to bring these leaders together in Istanbul.”

Field Developments

On the ground, Kharkiv Governor Oleksiy Synehubov announced yesterday that at least 14 people were injured in a Russian airstrike targeting a medical facility in eastern Kharkiv, Ukraine. Synehubov reported that rescue teams managed to retrieve four survivors from the rubble and are continuing the search for two more individuals. Additionally, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its air defense systems had intercepted 105 Ukrainian drones.
