India secured a solid 48-run victory over New Zealand in the first of a five-match T20 international series held in Nagpur. Opener Abhishek Sharma led the charge, scoring an impressive 84 runs off just 35 balls, helping India reach a total of 238-7 after being sent in to bat first.
Sharma’s explosive performance featured eight sixes, giving India a strong foundation for their innings. Rinku Singh contributed a late but crucial unbeaten 44 runs, further solidifying India’s position. In response, New Zealand struggled to keep up with the required run rate, finishing at 190-7.
India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, praised Sharma’s overall approach to the game, highlighting not just his batting skills but also his preparation and attitude. This win gives India a 1-0 lead ahead of the T20 World Cup scheduled to begin on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka.
Glenn Phillips was a standout performer for New Zealand, scoring 78 runs from 40 deliveries. He formed a significant partnership with Mark Chapman, who added 39 runs. However, Phillips’ dismissal in the 14th over off spinner Axar Patel marked a turning point for New Zealand, ending their chances for a successful chase despite some lapses in fielding from India.
Varun Chakravarthy was pivotal for India, taking two important wickets, including that of Tim Robinson and Chapman. Shivam Dube also contributed with two wickets in the final over, applying further pressure on the New Zealand batting lineup.
Even with India losing two early wickets, Sharma’s aggressive batting kept the momentum going. Suryakumar Yadav managed to stabilize the innings, scoring 32 runs off 22 balls and forging a 99-run partnership with Sharma. Nonetheless, Yadav is still looking to regain his form, having gone without a fifty in his last 23 T20 innings.
Sharma reached his fifty in just 22 balls before being dismissed by Ish Sodhi. Following his departure, India lost a couple of quick wickets, leading to a dip in scoring until Rinku Singh’s late flurry of runs effectively closed the innings.
New Zealand’s captain, Mitchell Santner, acknowledged India’s dominance at home, noting their impressive record over the past two years. The teams will face off again on Friday in Raipur for the second match of the series.
