The inaugural match of the ILT20 at Dubai International Stadium kicked off in style, coinciding with the UAE’s 54th National Day celebrations. The Desert Vipers secured a well-deserved victory against the Dubai Capitals, marking a successful start to the tournament.
Having faced the Capitals in the previous season’s final and coming away empty-handed, the Vipers were eager for redemption. Winning the toss gave them the upper hand, enabling their bowlers to restrict the Capitals to 150/8 on a pitch that offered ample opportunity for runs.
In response, the Vipers needed only 19 overs to chase down the target, finishing with a score of 151 for 6. The standout performer for the Vipers was wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous, who played a scintillating innings of 58 runs off just 36 deliveries, including six fours and three sixes. His partnership of 50 runs with Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman set a strong foundation for the chase.
The Capitals attempted a comeback when the Vipers lost a few wickets in quick succession, slipping to 109 for 4. However, Dan Lawrence and Khuzaima Tanveer remained composed, guiding their team to victory with a calm partnership down the stretch.
Earlier, the Capitals’ innings was characterized by missed opportunities, with several players, including West Indies’ Rovman Powell, unable to convert their starts into substantial scores. The Vipers’ bowling attack, led by Pakistani pacer Naseem Shah, consistently applied pressure. Shah, who took 1 wicket for 30 runs in his four overs, was supported by David Payne, Noor Ahmad, and Khuzaima Tanveer, each contributing crucial wickets to their successful bowling effort.
Gous’s impressive performance earned him the Player of the Match accolade. After the match, he shared his thoughts: “It was a bit slow up front, but it started to get better when we were batting. I’ve come in with confidence, so it is something I want to keep going. It’s good to get that first fifty behind as we go into the rest of the tournament; there are some very good teams.”
