Ashwin to Miss Australia’s BBL Following Knee Surgery

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will not participate in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season due to knee surgery. This marks a significant setback for the 39-year-old cricketer, who aimed to make his BBL debut with Sydney Thunder, making him the first male Indian player to join the league.

Ashwin’s path to the BBL was made possible after he retired from international cricket last year and concluded his Indian Premier League (IPL) career in August. This departure allowed him to bypass the restrictions imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which prevents current players from competing in overseas leagues.

Expressing his disappointment, Ashwin stated, “I’m gutted to miss BBL.” He emphasized that his primary focus now is on recovery and returning to form. He also expressed gratitude towards the Thunder organization and their fans for their support. Ashwin hopes that if his rehabilitation and travel plans align, he will be able to meet the team and fans later in the season.

The injury occurred during his preparations for the BBL season, necessitating the surgery. Trent Copeland, the general manager of Sydney Thunder, shared the team’s dismay over Ashwin’s injury and extended their well wishes for his recovery.

Despite the disappointment, Ashwin has committed to dedicating his season to the Thunder. His decision comes after he went unsold at the player auction for the International League T20 in the UAE. Over his impressive career, Ashwin has taken 537 wickets across 106 Tests with an average of 24.00. He also boasts records in 116 one-day internationals and 65 Twenty20 matches.

The BBL is set to commence on December 14, and while Ashwin will not be part of the action, his aspirations for future involvement remain intact.
