Bencic Overcomes Fitness Struggles to Pursue Dubai Aspirations

Belinda Bencic’s recent performance at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships highlights her resilience despite setbacks. Following her withdrawal from the Abu Dhabi Open due to illness, she managed to display a positive demeanor while engaging with fans, even holding a toddler for a photo.

As the 28-year-old Swiss player arrived in Dubai, she faced a tough first-round match against Spain’s Jessica Bouzas. Bencic, seeded ninth, had to overcome a rocky start, ultimately securing a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. This match marked her return to competition after her absence, which had hindered her practice.

Reflecting on her recent challenges, Bencic voiced her concerns about her fitness and game consistency. “I’m struggling a bit with my fitness and, of course, with ball security,” she admitted. Despite not feeling at her best, she expressed happiness at returning to play. The psychological toll of losing confidence in her game was notable, but she remains determined to regain her form.

Looking ahead, Bencic anticipates a tough match against Czech player Sara Bejlek, who she described as playing “really great tennis” and possessing significant confidence. The match is set to be an exciting showdown, and Bencic is eager to seize her chance.

In a striking contrast to Bencic’s journey, British player Emma Raducanu faced an early exit from the tournament. The 2021 US Open champion lost to Croatia’s Antonia Ružić in a tightly contested three-set match. Similarly, Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open victor, also fell short, being defeated by Anna Kalinskaya.

Kalinskaya moves on to face Coco Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion, as part of the next round. In another turn of events, Amanda Anisimova advanced after her opponent, Barbora Krejčíková, withdrew due to injury, providing her with a walkover into the next phase.

Paula Badosa showcased dominant form in her evening match, outclassing Katerina Siniakova with a 6-3, 7-5 win. The upcoming matches promise to deliver more thrilling tennis, with Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina and defending champion Mirra Andreeva set to compete.

One of the highlights of the next round will be Filipina player Alexandra Eala, who takes on sixth-seeded Jasmine Paolini. Eala’s match is generating excitement as she aims for a spot in the round of 16, contributing to what is shaping up to be an exhilarating day of tennis.
