Bhupat Seemar Shines Bright as Meydan Prepares for Festive Friday

Festive Friday at Meydan Racecourse marks the beginning of an exciting conclusion to the 2025 Dubai Racing Carnival. This event kicks off a series of themed meetings leading into a significant 2026, which will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the prestigious $12 million Dubai World Cup (G1).

The event features nine top-tier races, providing strong insights for the upcoming $30.5 million Dubai World Cup meeting on March 28. Blending elite racing with a holiday atmosphere, Festive Friday offers both entertainment for casual spectators and vital information for devoted racing enthusiasts tracking early-season form.

Emaar, a major property developer in the UAE and a key partner of the Dubai Racing Club, sponsors all nine races on the card. For newcomers, Festive Friday serves as an ideal introduction to the premier racing experience in Dubai, with many featured races acting as qualifiers for the main event, allowing trainers to evaluate horses suited for the international stage.

The race card showcases a mix of Group 1, Group 2, and Listed contests, presenting an exceptional array of races. Group 1 events draw the best horses globally, while Group 2 races feature top competitors just below that level, and Listed races highlight emerging talents, offering a thrilling variety of both established stars and rising athletes.

The spotlight of the evening is the Dh1 million Al Maktoum Mile (G2), a one-mile dirt race known for producing contenders for the Dubai World Cup. History shows past champions like Algiers, Military Law, and North America have successfully moved on to compete in the main event. Notably, Glória de Campeão is the only horse to win both this race and the Dubai World Cup during the same season.

This year’s edition features Bhupat Seemar, a two-time UAE champion trainer, who remarkably enters eight of the 13 runners—a record in the event’s 30-year history. This impressive entry underscores the strength of his Zabeel Stables and the confidence owners have in him, particularly after his success with Laurel River in the 2024 Dubai World Cup.

Among Seemar’s contenders is Imperial Emperor, who previously won the G2 Al Maktoum Classic and progressed to the Dubai World Cup last season. Seemar notes that Imperial Emperor has improved physically, stating he is now a “much thicker horse,” while acknowledging that fitness will be a key concern in his first race back.

Other promising entrants from Seemar include last-race winner Mendelsson Bay, the talented Killer Collect, and West Saratoga, who competed in the Kentucky Derby. Countering Seemar’s dominant entry is King Gold, a reliable Group 1 victor who finished second in the $1 million Godolphin Mile (G2) on World Cup night.

Defending champion Meshtri aims to make history by becoming the second horse to win the Al Maktoum Mile consecutively, following in the footsteps of Le Bernardin. He is trained by Michael Costa, who leads Jebel Ali Stables. Another contender to watch is Tumbarumba, representing Qatar’s Wathnan Racing.

Key aspects to observe include the early positioning of race leaders, how returning horses manage their initial run of the season, and identify which horses could emerge as genuine contenders for the World Cup.

The Dh850,000 Al Rashidiya (G2) serves as the main turf feature of the night and will offer early indications for the G1 $5 million Dubai Turf on World Cup night. Godolphin’s Charlie Appleby, who has won this race five times and claimed victory in the last two editions with Measured Time, fields a strong trio for this race.

His contenders include Opera Ballo, who boasts four wins from six starts and is returning to a turning track that should suit his running style. Nations Pride, a seasoned four-time Group 1 winner, is also back, having recently completed an international campaign, while First Conquest brings commendable form from previous meetings at Meydan.

Appleby expressed confidence in his team, stating, “We feel we have three strong contenders.” Challengers from abroad, including Irish raider Chicago Critic and French Group winner Caramelito, promise to make this tactical contest over 1800 metres even more competitive.
