Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan recently opened up about his upbringing, highlighting the contrast between his current success and his family’s modest beginnings. Despite now enjoying a luxurious lifestyle, he shared that he was raised in a lower-middle-class household filled with love and support.
In a candid conversation on the podcast “Be A Man, Yaar!”, Varun reflected on his childhood, noting that his father, renowned filmmaker David Dhawan, worked tirelessly to provide for the family. He remarked, “I got more love in childhood than wealth. Because we were not very well-to-do as we became later.” This perspective offers a glimpse into the values that shaped his early life.
Living with financial uncertainty, Varun recalled taking an auto rickshaw to school, revealing that the family’s economic status rarely impacted his happiness. He said, “Make me sleep on bed or floor, it didn’t matter.” His father’s rigorous commitment to filmmaking often left little time for family. Varun described how sometimes his mother reminded him that the meals they enjoyed were a result of his father’s hard work, especially during periods when his father’s films faced challenges at the box office.
David Dhawan’s career began in 1984 as an editor for the film “Saaransh.” He transitioned to directing, making his debut with “Taaqatwar” in 1989. His big break came in 1993 with the hit “Aankhen,” leading to a fruitful collaboration with actor Govinda in numerous successful comedies, including “Biwi No.1,” “Coolie No.1,” and “Hero No.1.” Over his extensive career, David has directed nearly 45 films, establishing himself as a stalwart in the industry.
Varun followed a different path into the film world. He initially served as an assistant director before being introduced to the industry by Karan Johar. His debut in “Student of the Year” catapulted him to fame, and he quickly established himself with hits like “Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania” and “Badlapur.”
Looking ahead, Varun and David Dhawan are poised to release their latest project, “Hai Jawaani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.” The film features an ensemble cast, including Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, and was recently rescheduled to premiere on June 12 to avoid competition with another film. The anticipation surrounding their collaboration highlights the dynamic relationship between father and son both on and off the screen.
