Can Joe Root Surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s Legendary Record

Farokh Engineer, the former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman, recently shared insights on Joe Root, who is poised to lead England in the upcoming Ashes series against Australia. Despite battling a spinal infection in Manchester, Engineer spoke confidently about Root’s potential to reach new heights in his career, including breaking the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time Test runs record.

Root, currently at 13,543 runs in 158 Tests, is just 2,384 runs short of Tendulkar’s record of 15,921 runs. While the Australian media has featured extensive analysis of Root’s batting, his impressive statistics since 2020—over 6,000 runs at an average of 55.21—have sparked conversations among pundits about his chances of overtaking Tendulkar.

Engineer expressed admiration for Root, noting that he knows Root’s parents personally and appreciates their character. He emphasized that while Tendulkar holds a special place in his heart, he believes that if Root breaks the record, Tendulkar would be genuinely happy for him. Engineer pointed out that records are often a byproduct of the players’ desire to win matches rather than an outright goal.

Another voice in the discussion, Nadeem Khan, a former Pakistan Test player, reflected on his time training Root during his formative years at Yorkshire. Khan praised Root’s dedication and resilience, suggesting that these qualities position him well to break records in the game. Despite not having scored a hundred in Australia yet, he highlighted Root’s technical and mental capabilities.

Should Root maintain his current form, many experts speculate that he could surpass Tendulkar’s record within a few years. Khan noted that he would be thrilled if Root were to achieve such a milestone, particularly given the effort he dedicated to training Root in the nets.

Dilip Vengsarkar, a former Indian captain, also contributed to the conversation by lauding Root’s exemplary application and consistency in batting. He underlined the challenges faced by batters in England, making Root’s achievements even more impressive. Vengsarkar indicated that Root’s solid technique allows him to recover quickly from lean patches, enhancing his chances of continuing to score runs successfully.

Ramiz Raja, reflecting on the era of cricket that included Tendulkar’s debut, expressed his surprise at Root’s consistent rise in the sport. He drew parallels between Root and Rahul Dravid, acknowledging Root’s strategic approach to batting. While he recognized the difficulty of comparing players across different eras, Raja commended Root for his remarkable consistency, which puts him in a favorable position to challenge Tendulkar’s legacy.

Jonathan Trott, who played alongside Root, noted that Root’s passion for cricket remains undiminished since their debut together in 2012. Trott pointed out Root’s relentless drive for improvement, even when he has just performed exceptionally well. This hunger for excellence suggests that Root is not only focused on his achievements but is also keen to elevate his game further.

As the Ashes approach, cricket fans and experts alike are keenly observing Joe Root’s progress. His journey holds significant interest, particularly for Indian supporters who fondly recall Tendulkar’s remarkable career. The tension is palpable, as Root aims to not only excel in the upcoming series but also to potentially rewrite the record books.
