Cooper Connolly made a memorable debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by scoring an impressive unbeaten 72, leading the Punjab Kings to a three-wicket victory over the Gujarat Titans. The Australian all-rounder attributed this turnaround in performance to a much-needed mental reset after a challenging period.
At 22, Connolly faced difficulties in recent months, particularly during Australia’s recent Twenty20 International series against Pakistan, where he managed only a single run across three innings. His struggles continued during the 2026 T20 World Cup, where he scored just three and 11 runs in two matches as Australia exited in the group stage.
Taking a break at home provided Connolly with the perspective he needed. “I had a couple of weeks at home, a refresh and reset, spent some time with family and friends,” he shared, highlighting the importance of this time away from the game. During this period, he resolved to enter the IPL with a fresh mindset.
Connolly’s performance was vital for Punjab as he built pivotal partnerships with Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett. This collaboration proved essential, especially after the team stumbled, losing four wickets for just eight runs. Maintaining a calm demeanor on the field, Connolly noted, “Not a lot was said. It was sort of relaxed out there. We still felt like we were in a really good position to win the game.”
His innings featured five sixes and five fours, showcasing his aggressive playing style. Punjab’s captain, Shreyas Iyer, praised Connolly’s shot-making skills, describing them as “surreal.” Iyer also acknowledged Connolly’s strong understanding of the game, hoping he would maintain his current form.
Having secured fourth place in the IPL standings, Punjab Kings will face the Chennai Super Kings next, eagerly anticipating continuing their momentum from this victory.
