As the Delhi Capitals prepare for the IPL 2026 Auction, CEO Sunil Gupta provided an overview of the team’s strategy, key player retentions, and a recent trade involving Nitish Rana. These insights come ahead of the auction scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi.
The upcoming auction features a competitive pool with 1,390 registered players, out of which 350 have been shortlisted, including 240 Indian players and 110 from overseas. This year’s selection includes 224 uncapped Indian talents and 14 uncapped international players, promising an influx of fresh talent to the tournament.
Gupta emphasized the importance of the core group retained from last season, acknowledging the lessons learned from narrowly missing the playoffs. He stated, “We take those lessons forward and go again with a strong set of players, fully focused on achieving our objectives.”
In a recent trade, Delhi Capitals acquired seasoned player Nitish Rana from Rajasthan Royals in exchange for Donovan Ferreira. Gupta highlighted Rana’s local roots and experience, noting that his addition aligns well with the team’s strategy. “Nitish is a seasoned IPL campaigner and a valuable addition to our squad,” Gupta remarked, expressing enthusiasm about Rana joining the team.
Delhi Capitals head to the auction with a budget of ₹21.80 crore and a need to fill eight player slots, including five overseas positions. Gupta pointed out that preparations for the auction have been in progress for some time. “Our scouting team has done an excellent job, and we are clear about our targets,” he mentioned, indicating a proactive approach to fulfilling the squad’s remaining requirements.
While Gupta anticipates an aggressive bidding process, he also recognizes the unpredictability of auctions, advocating for flexibility during the acquisition phase. “We’re looking forward to the auctions in Abu Dhabi,” he concluded, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting auction season.
