Djokovic Ousts Sinner to Face Alcaraz in Australian Open Final

Djokovic’s remarkable match concluded in the early hours of Saturday, with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-3, 4-6,*-6-4, 6-4. The intense, over four-hour showdown showcased his resilience and strategic prowess as he overcame the defending champion.

Reflecting on the match, Djokovic shared, “It feels surreal to be honest playing over four hours.” He recalled a previous final against Rafa Nadal in 2012, highlighting the high level of intensity and quality against Sinner, which he deemed essential for his victory.

Addressing Sinner’s recent success over him, Djokovic humorously remarked about changing his “number” after losing their last five encounters. He expressed immense respect for Sinner, acknowledging the challenge he presented and the effort required to secure the win.

Looking ahead, Djokovic is set to face world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the final. Alcaraz advanced after a hard-fought victory against Alexander Zverev in what became the longest semi-final in Australian Open history.

Djokovic’s upcoming matchup is significant as he aims for his record-extending 11th title in Melbourne, which would also contribute to his pursuit of a historic 25th Grand Slam title—one that has thus far eluded him.

The path to the semi-finals was not without challenges for Djokovic. His quarter-final match against Lorenzo Musetti was cut short due to Musetti’s injury after Djokovic had won the first two sets, and he received a walkover in the fourth round when Jakub Mensik withdrew.

The semi-final against Sinner, however, required utmost focus and determination. Djokovic faced multiple break points in the decisive set but maintained his composure. After breaking Sinner’s serve to take a 4-3 lead, he raised a fist in celebration, reflecting his competitive spirit.

In a tense final game, Djokovic held his nerve, saving additional break points before serving an ace to send his supporters into a frenzy. With two match points set up through a stunning forehand winner, he ultimately clinched the victory when Sinner misfired a backhand.

After the match point, Djokovic could not contain his emotions, dropping to his knees and expressing gratitude to the tennis gods for the victory.
