DP World ILT20: Simon Doull Highlights Continuous Annual Improvement

The DP World ILT20 is establishing itself as a prominent global T20 league while significantly contributing to the growth of cricketers from the UAE and surrounding regions. Former New Zealand player and commentator Simon Doull remarked on the league’s evolving standards.

Doull noted an overall improvement in the quality of play, observing that the level of competition has been rising annually. This trend showcases the tournament’s effectiveness in enhancing local talent. He pointed out that local players are increasingly being entrusted with crucial roles, reflecting positively on this season’s developments.

Highlighting the progress of young cricketers, Doull specifically mentioned pacer Khuzaima Tanveer, who has made a notable impact this season. He praised Tanveer’s attributes, including pace and variation, emphasizing his contribution to the Desert Vipers’ success.

Veteran players have also played a vital role in the league’s unfolding dynamics. Muhammad Waseem’s performance as the top scorer and Sam Curran’s all-around contributions have been particularly commendable. Doull’s appreciation of their consistency illustrates the importance of experienced players in the league.

The timing of the tournament within the global cricket calendar is seen as beneficial, according to Doull. He expressed his admiration for the league and its scheduling, which he believes will sustain and enhance its appeal in the future.

The league has also expanded its reach by including players from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia in each franchise. Doull highlighted how this initiative is pivotal for regional growth, allowing players to learn alongside seasoned professionals and subsequently share that experience upon returning to their home nations.

Emphasizing the need for performance-based inclusivity, Doull stated that maintaining high standards will open up more opportunities for emerging players over the coming years. He stressed that inclusion must be earned, but it also serves as a catalyst for development.

Additionally, the DP World ILT20 Player Development Initiative, which engaged seven African cricketers, holds potential benefits for the broader cricket landscape on the continent. Doull acknowledged that training with international stars provides unique learning experiences that can foster improvement among young players.

In terms of individual performances, Dubai Capitals’ Waqar Salamkheil has emerged as a standout, leading the tournament in wickets taken. His successful left-arm wrist spin has positioned him as a contender for the Best Bowler award for a second consecutive season. Doull expressed optimism regarding the continued significance of spin bowling in T20 cricket.

The current season has also seen a trend where leading run-scorers possess strike rates below 135. Doull highlighted the necessity for situational awareness in modern T20 batting, explaining that while strike rates are crucial during the first innings, the ultimate goal is winning, which holds greater importance in chases.

Overall, the DP World ILT20 continues to thrive, showcasing improved standards, diverse talent, and a structural framework that supports the cricketing ecosystem both locally and regionally.
