ECB Emphasizes Inclusivity Following Reports of Pakistan Players Excluded

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the eight franchises of The Hundred announced a commitment to inclusivity by stating that nationality should not determine player selection. This decision comes in light of previous reports suggesting that certain Indian-owned teams would avoid signing Pakistani cricketers.

Recent discussions pointed to concerns regarding the participation of Pakistan players amid ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan. The BBC highlighted that teams such as the Manchester Super Giants, MI London, Southern Brave, and Sunrisers Leeds were reportedly hesitant to recruit players from Pakistan.

In their statement, the ECB emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating that The Hundred aims to engage new audiences and foster a sense of belonging among all participants, regardless of their backgrounds. They clarified that selection should be based strictly on performance and team needs, without regard to nationality.

The player auction for The Hundred is set to take place on March 11-12 in London, attracting considerable attention with 67 Pakistan players having registered. Notable names include fast bowlers Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah.

It is significant to note that Pakistan players have faced exclusion from the Indian Premier League (IPL) since 2009, underscoring the challenges they encounter in the cricket landscape due to geopolitical factors.

The Hundred, which features a unique 100-ball format, will be held from July 21 to August 16 this year. The league has recently allowed private investment, leading to the acquisition of four franchises by IPL owners, which may influence the dynamics of player selection and participation going forward.
