An impressive performance by Will Jacks, along with strong bowling from Sam Curran and Jamie Overton, led England to a 24-run victory over Italy in the Twenty20 World Cup. This win secured England’s progression to the Super Eight stage, reinforcing their status as two-time champions.
Jacks was named Player of the Match after scoring an outstanding 53 runs off just 22 balls, contributing significantly to England’s total of 202-7. The team capitalized in the final overs, adding 88 runs to establish their highest score of the tournament.
Italy, playing in their first T20 World Cup, saw Ben Manenti making a valiant effort with a quick 60 runs. Although Italy fought hard, their chances of causing an upset diminished when Curran dismissed Grant Stewart for 45 in the penultimate over, ultimately leading to an all-out score of 178.
Italy captain Harry Manenti expressed pride in his team’s performance, highlighting the pressure that associate nations are applying to traditional cricketing powers. He noted, “Good for the game with 20 teams in the competition,” underscoring the competitive spirit.
England opted to bat first, with Phil Salt and Tom Banton putting up decent individual scores of 28 and 30, respectively. Banton’s dismissal came when he tried to hit Crishan Kalugamage for a six, leaving England at a precarious 105-5. Jacks then stepped in, complementing his efforts with powerful hitting that included four sixes and three fours.
The Italian innings faced early trouble, plummeting to 22-3 within the first four overs. Jofra Archer claimed two wickets, and Harry Manenti was caught off Jamie Overton’s bowling. However, Ben Manenti joined Justin Mosca in a substantial 92-run partnership, rekindling hopes for Italy.
Despite Manenti’s exploitation of the bowling attack, scoring six sixes from just 25 balls, he was eventually caught at mid-on. Mosca’s dismissal by Adil Rashid further weakened Italy’s position, leaving them at 139-7.
Stewart’s late fireworks, including four sixes, positioned Italy within striking distance, needing 30 runs off the last 12 balls. However, misfortune struck when he became Curran’s victim. Overton took the last two wickets to secure the win for England.
Jacks acknowledged the need for improvement, reflecting on the match dynamics and emphasizing the urgency for the team to elevate their performance. England concluded their Group C campaign with three victories and one loss to the West Indies, who also advanced to the Super Eights.
Italy, already out of the tournament, is set to play a final match against the West Indies on Thursday, where they will hope to make a statement despite their previous defeats.
