Ethiopian Athletes Shine at Dubai Marathon with Double Victory

Ethiopian long-distance runner Nibret Melak made an impressive debut at the Dubai Marathon, securing the men’s elite title during the event’s 25th anniversary. The marathon attracted thousands of running enthusiasts, reinforcing its status as a premier race in the region.

In the women’s elite category, fellow Ethiopian athlete Anchinalu Dessie put on a remarkable performance, clinching the top spot with a personal best, illustrating the dominance of Ethiopian runners at this iconic marathon. This year’s race marked the fifth consecutive time Ethiopians captured both titles, highlighting the historical success of athletes from Ethiopia and Kenya in this event.

Melak completed the race in a time of 2:04:00, displaying strong endurance throughout. He outpaced compatriot Yasin Haji, who finished second at 2:05:52, and Rwanda’s John Hakizimana, who earned bronze with a time of 2:06:04. Melak expressed his contentment with his preparation and emphasized his ambition of breaking the world record in the future.

His achievement is particularly noteworthy as he became the 11th debutant to win the Dubai Marathon, showcasing his potential and talent, evident from his third-fastest time in the history of the event, just 26 seconds shy of the course record.

On the women’s side, Dessie overcame a challenging start, trailing behind leader Muliye Dekebo until the final moments of the race. When Dekebo faced a sudden stomach issue, Dessie seized the opportunity to take the lead and ultimately secured her victory. Her time of 2:18:31 not only represented her personal best but also underscored her growing reputation as an elite marathon runner.

Dessie’s triumph marks her third consecutive marathon victory, following wins in Seville and Beijing in the past year. Completing the Ethiopian domination, Dekebo and Fantu Worku finished second and third, respectively, solidifying Ethiopia’s prowess in distance running.

Supported by the Dubai Sports Council, this year’s marathon featured elite competitors from around the globe on a fast and flat course. In addition to the elite races, the event included a popular 10km Road Race and a 4km Fun Run, attracting numerous participants and further celebrating the spirit of running within the community.
