FIA and US University Join Forces to Enhance Safety in Sports Online

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has unveiled a significant research partnership designed to tackle online abuse in sports. This collaboration with the University of Notre Dame aims to delve into the causes and consequences of such abuse and to explore the potential role of artificial intelligence (AI) in both propagating harmful content and devising solutions.

The partnership will look closely at the intersection of online abuse with athlete identity, their mental health, and the responses from sports federations. With rising concerns about the impact of digital harassment, this initiative seeks to address the broader effects on sport and its participants.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration during an address at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. He underscored the importance of developing AI-driven solutions and evidence-based methods to create a safer, more inclusive sporting environment. Ben Sulayem emphasized the shared goal of fostering a secure online atmosphere for athletes, teams, and fans alike.

The project will employ AI-based tools, surveys, and research to monitor harassment patterns and identify risks. Additionally, it will initiate digital literacy workshops and a “Digital Civility and Safety Quest,” aiming to equip young individuals with the skills needed to navigate online spaces effectively. These initiatives are designed to protect athletes and cultivate safer digital communities that revolve around sports.

Findings from this research will contribute to several academic papers, including the UAOA Barometer report. This annual report serves as a key resource in understanding online abuse in sports, providing insights that could lead to practical policy enhancements designed to create safer online environments for the global sports community.

Moreover, the University of Notre Dame has joined the UAOA Charter, officially becoming the eighth academic institution to support the campaign. This marks a significant step in expanding the UAOA initiative in the United States, a nation with an entrenched sporting culture where leagues like the NFL, NBA, and MLB generate considerable online engagement and fan interaction.

The FIA’s United Against Online Abuse (UAOA) campaign is a research-focused coalition, bolstered by the FIA Foundation. The initiative has experienced swift expansion and has recently been honored with the Coalition for Peace award by Peace and Sport, reflecting its growing impact.

As the movement progresses, it aims not only to address the challenges posed by online abuse but also to create a more respectful and positive environment for all involved in sports. The collaboration represents a critical step towards understanding and combating digital harassment in an era where online interactions continue to shape the sports landscape.
