From Dream to Reality: The Minhas Brothers’ Journey in PSL Playoffs

The Multani siblings, Arafat and Sameer Minhas, are making waves in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL), even as matches are held in empty stadiums due to rising fuel prices. Their talent, however, is undeniable, with Arafat contributing significantly to Multan Sultans’ playoff push and Sameer shining for Islamabad United.

At just 21 years old, Arafat Minhas is a left-arm spinner who has claimed nine wickets across ten matches. His performances have been crucial in securing Multan Sultans’ playoff spot. Meanwhile, the younger Sameer, aged 19, has captured attention with his batting prowess, amassing 299 runs in nine matches and solidifying his role as a key player for Islamabad United.

The backdrop to their cricketing journey is marked by personal and familial struggles. Initially, their father, Kashif Minhas, a former Under-19 cricketer, was unwilling to support the boys in pursuing cricket, fearing family backlash. “I played for the Multan Under-19 team, but my father never allowed me to pursue the game,” he recounted. This initially led Kashif to abandon cricket and focus on the family’s car import business.

However, the passion for the sport never faded. Following the passing of his father in 2014, Kashif embraced their talent, enrolling them in cricket academies and ensuring they received proper training. “I even hired a Level 2 coach for them and built cricket pitches on our rooftop during the Covid-19 lockdown,” he reflected, highlighting his commitment to their dreams.

Their hard work soon yielded results. Arafat received a call-up to the senior Pakistan team in 2023, an emotional milestone for Kashif. “I was so proud that I couldn’t express it in words,” he shared. Sameer, too, made headlines with a remarkable innings against India in the Under-19 final, drawing attention from the cricket community.

As both brothers gear up for the playoffs, their father emphasizes the importance of maintaining momentum. “It is a beautiful moment for me,” he stated, expressing pride in their achievements. Kashif’s hopes extend to his youngest son Abdullah, who is also advancing in age-group cricket.

Additionally, Kashif acknowledges the integral role of his wife, Uzma Minhas, in supporting their cricketing aspirations. “She used to travel with us for training and matches,” he noted, attributing the family’s success to collective sacrifices and efforts.

The Minhas family’s journey through cricket showcases not just individual talent, but also the strength of familial support in overcoming obstacles and achieving dreams in the competitive landscape of professional sports.
