Gulf Giants Appoint England’s Vince as Captain for DP World ILT20

The Gulf Giants, owned by Adani Sportsline, are gearing up for the inaugural season of the ILT20 by appointing the accomplished England batter James Vince as their captain. This move signals the franchise’s commitment to building a competitive team ahead of the tournament.

James Vince brings extensive T20 experience to the role, having played over 300 matches with a commendable strike rate in the 130s. He was also a member of the England squad that celebrated its first-ever ODI World Cup victory in 2019. Vince has showcased his skills in various leagues, including the Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League, New Zealand’s Super Smash, and South Africa’s Mzansi Super League, where he consistently performed well.

As a dynamic stroke-maker, Vince has the ability to accelerate the innings right from the start. He has accumulated nearly 9,000 runs in T20 cricket, featuring four centuries and 51 half-centuries. His versatility extends beyond batting, as he can contribute with medium pace when needed.

In the upcoming season, Vince will be accompanied by notable players such as Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Jordan, David Wiese, and Tom Banton. Together, they aim to create a formidable lineup that can challenge opposing bowlers.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the captaincy, Vince remarked, “This is a great honour and an immense amount of responsibility to be captaining the Gulf Giants in the ILT20. I am glad that the team management and coach Andy Flower have placed trust in me. I hope to repay that with plenty of runs. I’ve had the good fortune of being captain in franchise cricket in The Hundred and with Hampshire in the Vitality Blast, where I experienced success. I aim to continue that trend in the ILT20.”

Head Coach Andy Flower expressed confidence in Vince’s leadership skills, stating, “I’ve known James for a long time, and I’m really looking forward to working with him again for the Gulf Giants. He is not only an outstanding top-order player and brilliant fielder, but also one of the best tactical captains I’ve encountered. With his winning experience and global T20 exposure, he will undoubtedly make a significant impact for us in the new year.”

The first edition of the ILT20 is set to feature a total of 34 matches held across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah, with six teams competing. The tournament kicks off on January 13 in Dubai, and the Gulf Giants will play their opening match against the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders on January 15 in Abu Dhabi.

Squad:
James Vince (C), Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Jordan, Chris Lynn, Tom Banton, Dominic Drakes, David Wiese, Liam Dawson, Jamie Overton, Qais Ahmad, Richard Gleeson, Ollie Pope, Rehan Ahmed, CP Rizwan, Aayan Afzal Khan, Sanchit Sharma, Ashwanth Valthappa.
