Gullit’s Insights on the Greatest of All Time Debate in Dubai

Ruud Gullit, one of football’s legendary midfielders, recently reminisced about his illustrious career while in Dubai promoting AC Milan and Puma’s new golf collection. Known for his remarkable achievements with AC Milan in the late 1980s and the Netherlands’ Euro 1988 victory, the former Ballon d’Or winner shared insights into the evolving landscape of football.

During an exclusive interview, Gullit reflected on the transformation of Dubai over the past 30 years, praising its stunning development. He noted the hard work behind the city’s success, which now attracts visitors from around the globe.

When discussing the changes in football since his playing days, Gullit pointed out that while tactics remain similar, the game has become faster and more physical. He remarked on the agility of modern players, contrasting them with taller athletes in the past. This evolution has seen smaller, quicker players excel, particularly in midfield roles.

Gullit also expressed his admiration for Diego Maradona, reaffirming his view that Maradona remains the best player he ever faced. He fondly recounted their encounters on the pitch, sharing that Maradona was not only an extraordinary player but also a wonderful person. Gullit expressed nostalgia for the times they spent together, particularly given Maradona’s legacy.

As a member of the storied AC Milan team of the past, Gullit discussed the impressive impact of Maradona on Napoli, which he led to two Serie A titles. Gullit acknowledged Maradona’s profound connection with southern Italy and the adoration he received from fans there.

Turning his attention to Lionel Messi, Gullit noted the similarities between him and Maradona. He described Messi as a remarkable talent but emphasized that he never anticipated another player of that caliber emerging from Argentina. According to Gullit, both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have made significant contributions to football, captivating fans for over a decade.

The conversation shifted to emerging talent, specifically Lamine Yamal, the young Spanish player who has drawn comparisons to previous Argentine greats. Gullit praised Yamal’s abilities but voiced concern over the immense pressure placed on him at such a young age, suggesting he needs time to adapt to his new status in football.

Addressing the current challenges facing the Italian league, Gullit attributed the struggles to financial issues and a lack of star players. He pointed out the shift of top talent to leagues with greater financial power, such as the Premier League. He advocated for Italian clubs to invest more in grassroots development, highlighting Barcelona’s successful integration of youth players following their financial troubles.

Gullit also reflected on the Dutch national team’s close calls in World Cup history, noting their three-finish as runners-up. Despite heartbreak in finals against host nations, he expressed pride in the legacy of “Total Football” that the Netherlands contributed to the sport. Although they have yet to win a World Cup, he remains hopeful for future success.

Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup, Gullit named several favorites, including the Netherlands, Spain, France, and Argentina. He expressed a wish for Brazil to recover from its current challenges, emphasizing the importance of their presence in the footballing world.

Through his reflections, Gullit has provided a glimpse into the past, present, and future of football, showcasing his enduring love for the game and its evolving narrative.
