Australia’s fast bowler Josh Hazlewood recently underwent precautionary scans for a potential hamstring injury during a domestic match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Fortunately, the scans cleared him of any muscle strain, allowing him to continue his preparations for the upcoming Ashes series.
In a Sheffield Shield match against Victoria, both Hazlewood and fellow fast bowler Sean Abbott sought medical attention after their bowling spells for New South Wales. Hazlewood experienced tightness in his right hamstring and subsequently left the field during Victoria’s innings. However, Cricket Australia confirmed that he is fit to travel to Perth for the first Test.
With Australia set to face England next week, Hazlewood’s availability becomes crucial, especially with the absence of skipper Pat Cummins, who is sidelined due to a back injury. The team is expected to rely on Hazlewood, along with Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland, to form its pace attack.
Sean Abbott, who was included in the Test squad as a backup option, has been diagnosed with a moderate-grade hamstring injury, ruling him out of the first Test. Cricket Australia noted that a recovery plan will be developed for Abbott over the coming weeks.
In the match against Victoria, Hazlewood bowled nine overs, taking one wicket for 22 runs. He did not bat in the innings, and he seemed to be limping slightly while greeting the opposing players post-match.
Steve Smith, stepping in as captain during Cummins’ absence, expressed relief over Hazlewood’s condition. He noted the challenges players face when balancing state responsibilities with national commitments, particularly when managing the health of key bowlers like Starc.
The first Test against England is scheduled to begin on November 21 at Perth Stadium, paving the way for further matches in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney into the New Year.
