Former Dubai resident Henrik Stenson is poised to rejoin the DP World Tour as he evaluates his competitive future leading up to 2026. Following a challenging 2025 season, he did not secure his playing privileges with LIV Golf, prompting him to reassess his career path.
At 49, Stenson has an impressive résumé, having won 22 professional titles, including the 2007 HERO Dubai Desert Classic, two DP World Tour Championship titles in 2013 and 2014, and the 2016 Open Championship at Royal Troon. His recent performance placed him 52nd in the Individual Standings for LIV Golf, resulting in him entering the Drop Zone.
Stenson has reportedly paid over £1 million in fines to the DP World Tour for participating in events without the necessary releases. Following an undisclosed suspension, he is now eligible to return as a member of the tour. His tenure on LIV Golf included serving as co-captain of Majesticks GC alongside notable players Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood, though it remains uncertain whether he has relinquished his ownership stake in the team.
The golfer’s transition to LIV Golf had significant implications; it led to his removal as Team Europe’s Ryder Cup Captain for the 2023 matches in Rome, a role that was assumed by Luke Donald. Under Donald’s leadership, Europe achieved victories in 2023 and 2025.
Reflecting on his career, Stenson stated, “Over the course of a career, you’re going to have good years, you’re going to have bad years – it’s part of professional sport.” Since his last appearance on LIV Golf in August 2025, he has not competed in professional events, sparking curiosity regarding his next steps.
While he had the option to participate in the LIV Golf Promotions event in January to attempt card recovery, he appears to be leaving his options open for the future, including potential opportunities within the Asian Tour. Currently, Stenson ranks seventh on the DP World Tour’s all-time money list, providing him access to a variety of tournaments, and he is also eligible to participate through sponsor invitations.
As Stenson approaches his 50th birthday on April 5, 2026, he will become eligible for the senior circuit. He has already registered for the Senior PGA Championship at The Concession Golf Club, scheduled for April 16–19, and is expected to participate in the European Legends Tour event in Barbados starting April 23.
Looking forward, Stenson has the chance to craft a versatile global schedule, which may include appearances at The Open as a former champion and the ISPS Handa Senior Open at Gleneagles, played on the King’s Course. The golfing community is keenly watching as one of its most accomplished players prepares for the next chapter of his career, amidst a shifting landscape that may foster more constructive collaborations between various golf tours.
