Historic ‘Baggy Green’ Cap of Bradman Auctioned for $460,000

A significant piece of cricket memorabilia has recently made headlines. The iconic “Baggy Green” cap that once belonged to legendary Australian cricketer Don Bradman was sold for an impressive $460,000 at an auction on the Gold Coast.

Originally presented to Indian cricketer Sriranga Wasudev Sohoni, the cap has been carefully preserved by Sohoni’s family for the past 75 years. This careful safeguarding has included strict rules about who could even see the cap; family members were only allowed to view it upon reaching the age of 16, and then only for five minutes.

The recent auction revealed that the cap was purchased by an anonymous bidder, who intends to display it in an Australian museum. Inscribed with the names “D.G. Bradman” and “S.W. Sohoni,” the cap remains in excellent condition, reflecting its storied history. Comparatively, another cap worn by Bradman had sold at auction in 2024 for $311,000 but was marred by sun-fading and insect damage.

Known as one of the greatest batsmen of all time, Bradman’s impressive statistics speak for themselves. He played 52 Test matches and boasted a staggering batting average of 99.94, a figure significantly higher than any other cricketer in history. This latest auction sale not only underscores Bradman’s legacy but also illustrates the continued interest and value placed on cricket memorabilia.
