The Indian cricket team recently celebrated a significant achievement, securing a bonus in recognition of their victory in the Men’s T20 World Cup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a reward of 1.31 billion rupees, equivalent to approximately $14.24 million, which is six times the prize money awarded for winning the championship.
India clinched their third T20 World Cup title after a commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand in the final held in Ahmedabad. This triumph allowed them to earn $2.34 million, marking a momentous occasion for the team and the nation as a whole.
The BCCI, known as the wealthiest cricket board globally, issued this substantial additional bonus to honor the players and support staff for their exceptional performance. This reward exceeds the overall prize purse for the tournament, which totaled $11.25 million, underscoring the significance of India’s achievement.
In a statement, the BCCI congratulated the players, support staff, and selectors, expressing their hopes for continued success in future competitions. This recognition follows a precedent set last year when the board awarded the Champions Trophy-winning team a cash bonus of $6.72 million, which was triple the amount they received for their victory.
With their latest success, captain Suryakumar Yadav emphasized the team’s aspirations for the future, mentioning that their next major objective is to secure a gold medal at the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. This reflects the team’s ambition to excel not only in T20 cricket but also on a global athletic stage.
