The UAE faced a challenging match in their opening T20I against Ireland, suffering a 57-run defeat in Dubai. This encounter served as an important preparation ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup, which is set to take place in India and Sri Lanka next month.
Ireland showcased their strength as a Test-playing nation, setting a formidable target by scoring 176 for eight runs in their allotted overs. In response, the UAE struggled, managing to only reach 121 runs before being bowled out in 19.5 overs. Openers Ross Adair and Lorcan Tucker were instrumental for Ireland, with Adair making 39 runs off 29 balls and Tucker contributing 38 runs from 25 balls.
The UAE’s bowling attack had the potential to limit Ireland’s total, especially at 145 for six in the 18th over. However, crucial late contributions from Ben Calitz, who scored an unbeaten 26 runs off 12 balls, and George Dockrell, with 22 runs off 10 balls, allowed Ireland to secure a strong total.
In their innings, the UAE started promisingly. Captain Muhammad Waseem scored 40 runs off 37 balls, and Aryansh Sharma added 23 runs off 17 balls, creating a solid opening partnership worth 54 runs within the first seven overs. Unfortunately, the dismissal of Sharma triggered a collapse within the UAE batting lineup, as they struggled against Ireland’s effective spin bowling.
Ireland’s left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys and leg-spinner Gareth Delany each took three wickets, significantly impacting the UAE’s performance. Delany, who claimed the wickets of Sharma, Rahul Chopra, and Alishan Sharafu, was awarded the man of the match for his efforts.
Looking ahead, the UAE will aim to recover and make a stronger showing in Saturday’s second T20I, which will be the final warm-up match before they head into the World Cup.
