Islamabad Triumphs Over Multan to Claim Spot in Qualifier 1

Islamabad United secured a spot in the top two of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with an impressive four-wicket victory over Multan Sultans. This win highlighted their strong form as they head into the playoffs.

In their chase for 193 runs, Islamabad reached the target with eight balls remaining, driven by a stellar performance from Mark Chapman. The New Zealand all-rounder, who hails from Hong Kong, scored an unbeaten 69 runs off just 33 deliveries, including four fours and six sixes, showcasing his explosive batting ability.

Multan Sultans initially set a challenging total of 192 for seven, with Shan Masood being the standout performer, scoring 44 runs off 33 balls. However, things looked precarious for Islamabad when they faltered to 72 for three by the eighth over.

Chapman’s entry to the crease marked a turning point. He built a vital partnership of 63 runs with Shadab Khan, who contributed 36 runs off 28 balls. Despite losing Shadab and two other quick wickets, Chapman maintained his composure. Facing 16 runs needed off the final 12 balls, he decisively took on Mohammad Wasim, sealing the victory with an impressive sequence of a double, a six, and two fours in the 19th over.

This half-century was crucial for Chapman, as he noted following the match, “It’s nice to come away with a win tonight. We played good cricket, and that is what’s required,” after being named the man of the match.

With this success, Islamabad concluded the league stage in second place, amassing 13 points from ten games, just four points shy of the leaders, Peshawar Zalmi. Meanwhile, Multan Sultans finished third with 12 points, maintaining a slight edge over the fourth-placed Hyderabad Kingsmen.

The playoffs are set to kick off on Tuesday, with Islamabad facing Peshawar in Qualifier 1 in Karachi, vying for a place in the final. Multan will take on Hyderabad in the Eliminator on Wednesday in Lahore. The outcome of these matches will determine who progresses to a virtual semifinal on Friday.

Unlike previous matches in the tournament, which were held without spectators due to a government decision to combat rising fuel prices amid regional tensions, the final promises to welcome back fans. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that tickets for this anticipated event will go on sale on Monday, making it a highlight for supporters eager to participate in the excitement of the league’s climax.
