Nathan Lyon recently expressed his disappointment about being dropped from a home Test for the first time in 14 years, coinciding with the team’s second Test in Brisbane. However, he remains optimistic as he prepares for the third Test at Adelaide Oval, a venue with personal significance for him.
The 38-year-old off-spinner is anticipated to return to the Australian lineup alongside captain Pat Cummins. Lyon previously worked as part of the Adelaide Oval ground staff, where he honed his skills before establishing himself as Australia’s leading Test off-spinner. He emphasized his eagerness to participate in matches, stating, “Every opportunity that there’s a Test match on, I want to be a part of.”
Despite his previous disappointment, Lyon is focused on the upcoming match. He acknowledged that it’s time to move on and concentrate on his role in the team. So far in the series, Australia leads 2-0, but Lyon has only bowled two overs, a situation he is keen to rectify at a ground where he boasts an impressive record of 63 Test wickets.
Lyon’s lack of recent play leaves him at 562 wickets, just one short of equaling Glenn McGrath’s record as Australia’s most prolific Test wicket-taker. Despite being 38, Lyon is resolute about his future in cricket and expressed that he has no plans for retirement. “I’ve played 140 Test matches. I feel like I don’t have a point to prove to anyone,” he stated, reinforcing his confidence in his abilities and contributions to the team.
The head groundsman at Adelaide Oval, Damian Hough, noted that the pitch is expected to provide assistance to spin bowlers. He highlighted that spin has historically played a role on this ground, indicating favorable conditions for Lyon’s skills. “Spin needs to play a part in pitches around Australia, and we want it to play a part,” Hough remarked, suggesting that Lyon could have a significant impact in the upcoming match.
As Lyon looks ahead, he remains committed to his goal of continuing to contribute to Australian cricket. “I love playing with everyone in that change room and love representing Australia,” he declared. His passion for the sport and determination to succeed are evident as he prepares for the challenges that lie ahead in the series.
