Manchester United secured a 2-1 comeback victory against Crystal Palace, thanks to a penalty from captain Bruno Fernandes and a header by Benjamin Sesko. This win marked a significant achievement for United, moving them into third place in the Premier League standings on Sunday.
Under the interim management of Michael Carrick, United extended their unbeaten streak to seven matches, accumulating 51 points from 28 games. In contrast, Palace’s defeat left them in 14th place with only 35 points.
Since the sacking of Ruben Amorim on January 5, United has shown remarkable form, winning six of their last seven matches. This marked their first time in third position since May 2023.
After the game, Fernandes expressed the importance of character in overcoming adversity. He emphasized the need for the team to remain focused on accumulating points as the season progresses.
Palace started the match strongly, controlling the first 30 minutes with an assertive style of play. They struck early, with Maxence Lacroix scoring the fastest goal United has conceded this season, just four minutes into the match. His powerful header from a corner caught the home side off guard.
Daniel Munoz nearly doubled Palace’s lead when he was set up by Ismaila Sarr, but his shot was saved by United’s goalkeeper Senne Lammens. As the first half continued, United began to right their ship; Sesko nearly equalized with a header from a Fernandes cross that forced a save from Dean Henderson.
The second half saw a shift in momentum. Fernandes equalized in the 57th minute with a penalty after Matheus Cunha was fouled, resulting in a red card for Lacroix following a VAR review. Just eight minutes later, Sesko completed the comeback by heading in Fernandes’ free kick.
United pressed for a third goal, with Casemiro’s volley requiring another diving save from Henderson. In stoppage time, Amad Diallo’s long-range effort also forced a save, while Joshua Zirkzee and Kobbie Mainoo had opportunities that were either blocked or went wide.
Carrick reflected on the match, noting the significance of the team’s response after halftime when faced with adversity for the first time this season. He appreciated the belief and personality displayed by the players, even when the game didn’t start in their favor.
Despite pressure from Palace in the closing minutes, United maintained their composure to secure the win. Glasner, the Palace manager, acknowledged the strong start his team had but recognized the impact of the red card on the match’s outcome, noting that it shifted the balance in United’s favor.
